Credits/Points:
CME 15.0, MOC 25
Availability:
03/12/15-02/28/18

Program Mission and Objectives

KSAP is a new continuing medical education and Part 2 MOC product that will review the essentials of nephrology for fellows preparing for initial certification, practicing nephrologists preparing for recertification, and practitioners looking to renew and refresh their clinical knowledge, diagnostic, and therapeutic skills.

This enduring material is composed of challenging, clinically oriented questions based on case vignettes.  Each question includes a detailed response that outlines both the approach to the clinical scenario at hand and the best answer.  References are provided from either recent well-done reviews from major and easily accessible journals or the classic original reference. Topics for inquiry are crafted from the ABIM Blueprint and the program will help the clinician assess his or her strengths and weaknesses in the broad domain of nephrology.

Target Audience

  • Nephrology certification and recertification candidates
  • Practicing nephrologists

 Learning Objectives

  1. Apply physiologic principles in the diagnosis and management of fluid and electrolyte disorders.
  2. Analyze the spectrum of common renal parenchymal disorders.
  3. Appraise the various causes of secondary and resistant hypertension.
  4. Describe common complications of acute and chronic kidney disease in both outpatient and hospital settings.
  5. Illustrate appropriate therapy known to delay progression and limit long-term consequences of chronic kidney disease.
  6. Categorize treatment modalities and complications of end-stage kidney disease, including peritoneal, hemodialysis and renal transplant.

The American Society of Nephrology has a variety of learning opportunities for members including the premier publications, Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (JASN), Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (CJASN), distance learning with online features and the popular Board Review Course & Update. In addition, the Nephrology Self-Assessment Program (NephSAP) has served for twelve years as a strategy for nephrologists to keep knowledge up-to-date and earn both Continuing Medical Education (CME) and Maintenance of Certification (MOC) points.  ASN has recognized a need for material that covers basic principles of clinical nephrology that would be appropriate for individuals who are studying for the In-Training/In-Service examination or preparing for the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) examination in the subspecialty of Nephrology. To this end, the concept of the Kidney Self-Assessment Program (KSAP) was developed.
